natasha's interview of me

here are amy's interview questions:
1.i have known you a long time. yup. what do you consider your best attribute, other than your hair, both physically and mentally?
i guess mentally i have a weird memory like a steel trap, i have the capacity to catalogue weird events and then remember the strange details, plus i do have somewhat of a calculating mind- even though i so rarely use it, i am sort of mathematically minded.
physically i would have to say my knees, they are freckled and that's about all i have to say about that.
2.if you could go back and live in any historical era, what would it be, where would it be, and what would your station in life be there?
nothing too difficult, probably the 50s when people are just getting into "modern conveniences", i like to be clean way to much so anything without running water would not be for me. plus during that 40s/ 50s period people enjoyed the things i actually like to do now. my station unfortunately would probably be just as i am now, a single person ( i guess i would be known as a spinster by now, eh?)
3.if you could be a famous person, alive or dead, one man and one woman, who would it be and why? choose one of each for looks, and one of each for personality or accomplishments. did i already mention that these questions are tough... i don't know, someone creative who accomplished something, i don't know who i would want to be looks wise, someone still with red hair. i am sorry but i can't do this one.... i guess i wouldn't want to be a person who was known for one thing, i would rather be good at lots of stuff. anyway.
4.congrats on getting into library school...once you graduate, what would be your dream job? it doesn't need to be realistic.
i really love music and organization/ information structure so maybe something dealing with those two things, but not like a musicologist, more like a cataloguer (digital of course) of music (really only music i like, i want to specialize in things i only like!) ok that description sucked, i basically just described freaking napster. ok, i just want to organize people's records and cds for a living, that's it. i am going to grad school simply for that. to learn how to cross reference (is this a scene from party girl or what....)
5. you moved out on your own to dc and have actually been able to take care of yourself, first, kudos, second, what are the biggest things you have learned from the experience, and how do you think you have changed as a result? thanks. i have learned really random things like how to walk down a moving or stationary escalator. when i first got here i was terrified of escalators and having to walk on them (mostly down) but just today i walked down this huge escalator into the metro station. this is not a particularly important accomplishment, but i honestly remember having to walk down an escalator at dupont that was broken and i could almost not even force my legs to move- it was terrifying. there are still some wack escalators in dc that i will not walk down... EVER.
also, i walk really fast now. i was never a straggler, but now i am like a speed demon, i get so annoyed when there are all these visitors in dc and they are casually strolling. also, a really good lesson i learned is that in dc a man will basically push a girl out of the way to get a seat on the metro. i know that i cannot live w/o music in my ears while going to work/ coming home, it's terrible b/c it really is used as a barrier to the outside world/ noise/ and most importantly strangers who might want to converse with you. (um, notice all these things are related to my commute, the biggest change in my life since moving here....)
post the questions and answers on your blog, along with a call for people who want to do the same and be interviewed (if you want to be interviewed, please post a comment)

so finally, i post about the qotsa show. i was so tired, yet, it was totally worth it. i was so angry that i didn't bring my camera, angel and i got really close up on the right balcony (all the way down by the stage, next to the one vip) on josh's side so i would have had great photos, i guess i was afraid they would take my camera, they let you bring in cameras, but some times nix ones that look "too professional" i don't know what that means- zoom lens? so anyway... so for those not in the know, the 9:30 club is fantastic and the view is great from just about anywhere, but i had a spectacular view. the opening band throw rag were insane, some how two of the five members end up in their underwear dancing about in a creepy way (i have told people that it was so weird that josh, who was on the vip balcony opposite from us got his digital camera and was snapping photos on them cracking up... how insane does something have to be for josh to think it's weird, i mean he toured with nick for how long??) so they are amusing in a weird way, plus there was a guy (one of the non-pants variety) who played a washboard with spoons, who knew that so cal punk needed that??? i sure didn't
so queens take the stage, and as they were doing set up they put these white curtains around the stage so i thought what is up with that? well it was pretty freaking dramatic when they started playing still with the curtains (Someone's in the Wolf, which after seeing the video on the dvd scars the bejeezes out of me...) and then they pulled back the curtains- it was crazy.
the show was a great mix of all four albums, plus tons of lanegan action- i really think he might be singing on nearly half the songs now. of course the stage must get super dark before the lanegan will come out.
what else, tons of great stuff regular john, um, new version of god is in the radio, go with the flow (during which josh called this guy out...), burn the witch (so great), you would know, lost art, all great stuff (set list is here)

josh was super talkative, it was great, i don't remember him being so talkative. he was talkative before someone threw something at his head, but after, even more so. it was insane to see him go so ballistic, i guess from what anyone could gather, the guy was not pleased that nick wasn't there, oh drama. i saw josh flip the guy off earlier and then it was like a full on fight was about the erupt.
brody dalle was in the house- she looked fantastic kids, really pretty and super cool red high heeled boots.

btw, the photos are from:

i am lame

i just ditched my interpol ticket. as mentioned before, the doors don't open until 9, so it will be a very late show and with the wedding tomorrow and queens on sunday, i just didn't want to have to end up ditching on queens. anyway. i am lame. my coworker is taking care of selling my ticket for me (hopefully). laters

purse for steve's wedding

i feel like i am making progress on the purse for saturday, it's turning out pretty well, in my opinion that is. i am still undecided about the handles (what they should be make from). probably just canvas like the body of the purse... hmm. two days to figure that out. thanks to emma for all her help with the purse (um, that's the sewing machine). i wish i could post a photo album or a cast of characters to allow people to see who i am talking about. i'll try to figure that out soon also. laters.
EDIT: that idea was stolen from natasha

bad day

so found out some bad news today, not devistating, but kind of what am i going to do news. it's a bit realted to the part of my life that i don't particularly talk about on this blog, but people who know me have been asking am i ok, and i am, so just a shout out to you guys, thanks. (sorry to be cryptic, but i don't really keep this blog as a diary per se, so i don't share everything...)

BUT... i did get the new QOTSA album today with bonus dvd sucka!! watched the dvd and plan on really listening to the cd on the way to work tomorrow AM. i will note that the dvd features none other than jables doing what, HANDCLAPPING. that's what it's all about. qotsa do show some love for the handclapping.

what else, worked some more on the purse for michele's brother's wedding in pa this weekend. (michele has asked that include more details and specifics about the things i type about). Michele's brother's name is steve and he is marrying a person called jenna. there, details.

so this weekend will be total mayhehm:
friday night: interpol show in dc
saturday: drive up to PA, attend wedding
sunday: wake up in PA, attend breakfast with family, come back to dc for QOTSA show.
should be a fun yet totally tiring weekend.
that's all i got for now anyway...

legwarmer, you should have been watching grounded for life, but now it's too late...

update on the legwarmer, it's coming along, i plan on making the stripes totally random. so a few other random things to discuss.
i used to religiously watch grounded for life, it was such a fantastic show and then it was ripped from the airwaves by the wb (after being discarded by fox.. can you believe??? i mean donal logue went to harvard folks, i guess that's why it couldn't stay on fox, too good? don't know) so i don't watch that much tv (and actually no tv after 8 PM, not to sound pretentious or anything, i digress...) so i had this extra half hour of tv time i could dedicate to something else, so i have put my support now behind scrubs. wow that show is so freaking funny and just awesome. who doesn't love the braff??? i guess i am just trying to say, support good tv people, not american idol!!! that is all

oh, except for this. i must direct you to read McSweeney's. McSweeney's freaking rocks, plus they run a writing program for inner city kids, SUPPORTED IN PART BY A PIRATE SUPPLY STORE!!! HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG??? Right, over and out.

legwarmer update!! here's the progress on the legwarmer (will be plural, but right now, it's only a legwarmer... no s). what else. prepping for bill, nantucket and gilb.'s visit this weekend. that is all, over and out!

gilbert, nantucket and bill will visit at the end of this week, yeah!

just a quick four hour drive, and some photobooths

spent the weekend in pgh/ gbg. very short weekend visit, went by so fast. it didn't help that i felt totally tired and run down (i apologize to those i hung out with, i was so lame, sorry) had jioio's pizza at natasha and dana's house and watched some tivoed knitty gritty (always fun!!) and just kind of hung out. it's always nice to see natasha (and dana and the cats). so that was about all. natasha is a great knitter (as you can see she knits at work, at home, everywhere). i just thought of an amazing purse idea, so i hope to try that this week and have some exciting photos to post! oh, also, cbs sunday morning had a story about, what else, PHOTOBOOTHS. They showed the interior of the short stop (which i can apparently identify only seeing short 2 second shots of the back room), but luckily did not name drop it. greg, what is up with all the new publicity for the short stop??? (maybe greg d. can address this issue by posting a comment to my blog, or maybe not.... sigh).

NY Times article about photo booths

So, now the NY Times has run an article about the ressurgence of photobooths, which i normally would have supported, but alas, they have also name dropped my favourite l.a. establishment, the short stop. luckily, i am not sure that too many hipsters in l.a. actaully read the ny times (aside from michele), anyway, enjoy the read.

original artilcle from the ny times
March 6, 2005
Why Hollywood Says Cheese
By STRAWBERRY SAROYAN
LOS ANGELES
ANNABELLA ROSEMURGY, a 25-year-old actress - "but don't tell my agent, who thinks I'm 18" - and her best friend, Rebecca Oranges, 28, a hairstylist, arrived at the Short Stop bar here on a Saturday night for a drink and, possibly, a flirt. After grabbing a Jack and Coke (for Ms. Rosemurgy) and a Corona (for Ms. Oranges), the two surveyed the crowd. But it was only when they entered the nightspot's photo booth that they hit their stride, air-kissing the camera and striking favorite poses like the one they call "the Charlie's Angels," mock-guns pointing.
"The photo booth comes before boys," Ms. Rosemurgy said. "We were like little cats looking in a fishbowl, waiting for our pictures." Three $3 photo strips later, Ms. Rosemurgy had an idea: How about a visit to Lucky Strike Lanes, where there is a booth that was a hit with none other than Paris Hilton. "The booth there is the best," Ms. Rosemurgy said.
Formerly relegated to passport and visa offices (where they have now been replaced by digitized versions or an actual person with an actual camera), the old-fashioned photo booth is making a comeback. Bars and restaurants in San Francisco and New York are using them to attract customers, and individuals are buying them for their homes. But perhaps not surprisingly it is in Hollywood where they have become the toy du jour, with celebrities installing them as permanent party gimmicks for guests who never tire of seeing themselves in close-up. "There's no better foreplay than to have someone dive deeper into their own vanity on their own turf," said Dave Navarro, the guitarist with Jane's Addiction whose recent memoir, "Don't Try This at Home," features his photo-booth portrait on the book jacket and many photo strips inside.
For more than a year Mr. Navarro kept an old photo booth in his house to document visitors for the memoir, and though he has relegated it to the garage, his wife, Carmen Electra, won't let him get rid of it altogether.
"She thinks it's art," he said on the phone one recent morning from their home. "Is that what you said, honey?" Ms. Electra, an actress and a guest performer with the Pussycat Dolls, said yes, it was.
Photo booths, which were introduced in the 1920's, when strips cost 25 cents, are not created equal. Those with black and white film are the most desirable among clubgoers and the Hollywood elite, and they must be "dip 'n' dunks," as they are known in the business, which were manufactured before the early 80's or so.
Patti Peck, the owner of Edendale Grill Restaurant and Mixville Bar in the Silver Lake area here, which has had a booth since 2003 that has been a draw for actors like Jared Leto and Jorja Fox, explained the dip 'n' dunk process. "Inside, there's a carousel of little different chemicals, and the little piece of paper gets dipped in one solution and then the next solution and then 'Yoink!' " she said, mimicking the sound of a photo strip arriving. "It's kind of magical."
Brett Ratner, the film director whose credits include "After the Sunset," is also enamored of the machines. His vintage booth was the first purchase he made after buying Hilhaven Lodge, the former home of both Ingrid Bergman and Kim Novak. He said the booth is invariably the life of the party. He is at work on a sequel to "Hilhaven Lodge: The Photo Booth Pictures," his book of machine-made snaps.
Quentin Tarantino installed a photo booth at his house in the Hollywood Hills last year. Mr. Ratner said Mr. Tarantino got the idea from him after he saw his photo booth at the birthday party he gave for his former fiancée, the actress Rebecca Gayheart. After Rob Zombie, a rock music figure and film director, rented booths for both his wedding and his birthday party, he was hooked, too: Mr. Zombie is inquiring about buying his own. (According to Photo-Me USA of Grand Prairie, Tex., the largest supplier of old-fashioned photo booths, purchases cost $3,500 to $9,000; rentals start at $2,000.)
Photo booths even found their way into the movie awards season. At the Golden Globes show in January, Pat O'Brien, the host of the CBS celebrity program "The Insider," greeted the Globe winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx by shuttling them into a booth. " 'Let's do a smiley one,' " he recalled Mr. DiCaprio saying. Mr. O'Brien also made funny faces with Hilary Swank and Annette Bening. (Ms. Bening's husband, Warren Beatty, waited patiently outside the booth.)
Jamie Lee Curtis, who rented a booth for her 18-year-old daughter Anne's birthday party at the Hyatt in January, said, "There's something about the anonymity of a photo booth - that you get to pull the curtain and do whatever you want - that is very provocative and freeing. And dangerous."
The Short Stop's owner, Oliver Wilson, knows what Ms. Curtis was talking about. "You see people going absolutely bananas in there," he said. "There's a certain sexuality to it. Among the things he has seen: "Girls taking off their shirts. These are, like, good girls who have jobs and stuff. And guys taking down their pants." Matthew Barnard, a bartender at the Short Stop, recalled, "I had to kick a guy out one night because he was naked in there."
Those silly faces and sexy poses come naturally in the curtained privacy of the photo booth. So does romance. Patti Peck at Edendale Grill remembered a marriage proposal that took place in Edendale's booth. "He wanted the absolute excited look on her face - and he got it," she said. And Ms. Curtis said she had photo booth pictures of her and her husband, the director, writer and actor Christopher Guest, as the sole adornment on their 20th wedding anniversary party invitations last December.
Perhaps Hallie Faben, a 24-year-old film editor, has the most novel use for photo booths. She says they can come in handy in the dating game. After stopping by the Short Stop on a first date, she recounted, her companion suggested a whirl in the machine. "But our body language was kind of weird," Ms. Faben said, describing the photo strip, "so I took it as a sign that we shouldn't date."
Patented in 1925 by a Siberian immigrant, Anatol Josepho, photo booths were initially known as Photomatons, according to Babbette Hines, whose 2002 art book, "Photobooth," showcases some of her thousands of photo strips, which date back to the 20's and include G.I.'s heading off to World War II posing with their sweethearts. When Mr. Josepho sold the patent for $1 million in 1927 and the deal was written about on the front page of The New York Times the machines became famous, attracting the governor of New York, Al Smith, and Senator-elect Robert Wagner to the country's first booth, which was installed in Manhattan.
By the 30's the booths were at fairs, carnivals, department stores and in train stations across the United States, said Nakki Garonin, who is writing a history of photo booths. Then as now they were a way to playfully capture one's image for little more than the cost of several ice cream cones. They also acquired the patina of chic: in the 60's Andy Warhol installed one at his Factory, where Baby Jane Holzer and Edie Sedgwick posed in it.
The popularity of photo booths today can be attributed to a number of factors. Their appearance in the film "Amélie," nostalgia for all things retro and even, according to Ms. Hines, the recent appearance of Japanese photo-sticker booths in America have contributed to it. But Gary Gulley, a regional manager at Photo-Me, said a serendipitous mention propelled the fad. Photo-Me's services were listed in a bridal issue of InStyle magazine about three years ago, Mr. Gulley said, and after that Hollywood inquiries increased substantially.
In a city where many are enamored of their images, finding an old-fashioned dip 'n' dunk booth is like striking gold. "I have Paris Hilton in every look you can imagine," Mr. Ratner said. He estimated that Ms. Hilton took about 100 strips of herself at his home. Aficionados say the clincher is the glamorous look of the photo strips themselves. "It's the very bright flash that makes everybody look beautiful," Ms. Curtis explained. "It's like movie-star light."

Hmm, don't know what i think about all this, i guess i'll watch tonight and then see...

just some words for today.

no links, no photos, i am lame today.
i am been totally boring lately, in a craft funk if you will, not even really working on the leg warmers.
so i went to the show the other night, some people i know from back home are involved, so it was nice to see gbg representing in dc.
dc is such a lonely place that i appreciate all the company i get. there is this strange contingent of gbg/ pgh people who all go to the same shows, so i just said hi to all of them. i had a really great time and talked to some people/ caught up with some people and just hung out. it was a lot of fun. and if you know me at all, you know i like to go to shows (that's about all dc has going for itself, in my opinion). plus i got to hear some people say yinz, what more can you ask for on a sunday night in dc???
that's all i got....

leg warmers to be finished just in time for summer...

here's the progress, as of earlier yesterday, for the leg warmers.... i made a thin stripe of the green and then went back to the eggplant... rock. i do feel like i am making progress as the leg warmer is now almost twice as long as this photo. i knitted so much yesterday that i had dreams about knitting. i wish i could have known if my hands were moving when i was dreaming...
