the ethics of crafting

so, i wanted to make a journal out of the cover of an old book- obviously i am trying to start with books where the bindings are already broken, it still feels like maybe i am breaking some kind of library code of ethics, what does everyone think? i am torn. also, does anyone know anything about the book binding process? i am not a preservation person so i feel totally clueless on this.... suggestions please!
